To Us, and the Curious Threads Growing Out from Our Head

致我们,和从我们脑瓜里冒出来的奇思妙想

2019

Hair is a motif I have been working with for three years now. As a material, it is a tangible and transferable part of our body that both showcases individuality and functions as a connective thread. In To Our Dear Strange Hair, I collected hair strands from my friends and photographed them under lighting situations that are inspired from music and personalities of my friends. In the image-making process, I intended to assimilate the process of making photos to the process of drawing, in which I can start from a blank background, then add lines and color fields. Hair becomes my drawing lines.

This work includes a photobook and a flat sculptures both made from photo transfer onto canvases. Through acrylic gel medium photo transfer, I created volume inside a picture for the hair to live within and extend out. I have also been experimenting on the same subject in black and white analog photography by making photograms and sewing with real hair on darkroom prints.
